The Madison Artists Guild Presents OUTSIDE THE LINES: Joe Camoosa
Presented at the Gallery at Town 220. Opening reception Feb. 9 from 6 to 8 p.m. ![]() ![]() ________________________________________ Abandoned Rural America The American Small Family Farm In Transition ![]() An exhibition by Peter Muzyka, Blake Smith, Don Jolley, and Chuck Dyer Milledgeville - March 25 - April 20, 2012 Why I Planned This Show Throughout my life I have marveled at the beauty of nature, been drawn to the time-worn lines of character in the faces and hands of older folks, was inspired by the mysteries in untamed woodlands and wetlands. When I was a kid growing up in the mountains of Northeast Pennsylvania I would hike for hours in the woods to explore old trails where I would discover old rock structures thought to have been created by Native Americans for shelter. Old farmhouses are kind of like that to me. A wonder of people’s past lives, now devoid of human development, at the mercy of the elements and left to the wiles of nature’s transmutations. Some of the abandoned farm buildings were built so well that they would last for generations making one wonder why anyone would leave these houses empty and deserted. I can almost feel the spirits of the people who once settled in these rural buildings, visualize the children playing in the yards, husband chopping wood for the fire, wife preparing dinner for the family or working at the spinning wheel or sewing machine making clothes for them all. It occurs to me that the folks settling in these places had hopes and dreams for the future of their families and that they were possibly laying the foundation for future generations of their descendants to have an estate the family will always call their own and then have everything change direction forcing them to desert the homestead forever. My grandparents came to America from the Ukraine and Russia in the early part of the twentieth century and worked hard to establish such a foundation for the Muzyka family. Unfortunately it didn’t work out that way and each of their children went their own way abandoning the family homestead. This has always affected the way that I view the loss of family ties and the vacant, sad and lonely structures that represent broken dreams. It is often said that the eyes are a window onto the world. I see the windows of these abandoned homes as eyes that have seen the lives of vibrant people gone away leaving behind the spirit of their hopes and dreams. I‘ve invited
3 artist friends to participate in this opening exhibition. Possibly in the
future, if this show is accepted and travels to other areas, I may be able
to invite other artists to participate as well as add new works to the
exhibition. This book and exhibit is dedicated to the memory of all the dreamers and planners whose prospects for the future were irrevocably changed leaving behind an ethereal visage of what once might have been. - Peter Muzyka

The Madison Artists Guild Presents THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER: Works by Philip Morsberger & Anita Huffington ![]() Opening reception, Friday, September 9 from 7-9 p.m. Steffen Thomas Museum of Art 4200 Bethany Rd., Buckhead, GA 30625 The Madison Artists Guild and partner Steffen Thomas Museum of Art are proud to bring two world-class artists to Morgan County. Selected works by Philip Morsberger and Anita Huffington will be on view in at STMA from Sept. 9 through Oct. 31, 2011. Entitled Eye of the Beholder, this exhibit showcases the talents of these two friends, one a painter and the other a sculptor. The opening reception for this show will be on September 9, at 7 pm; it is free and open to the public. The show’s co-curators, Liselott Johnsson and Karen Strelecki of the Madison Artists Guild, have chosen works that exemplify the depth of talent of both artists. Morsberger was the Morris Eminent Scholar Emeritus in Art at Augusta State University and paints daily in his studio in Augusta. He travels frequently to Oxford University in England where, from 1971 to 1984, he was the Ruskin Master of Drawing. Major collections on both sides of the Atlantic, including the Morris Museum of Art in Augusta, Georgia, boast exuberantly colorful Morsberger paintings. Huffington’s figural sculptures in stone, wood, bronze and mixed media can be found in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, The Morris Museum of Art, Augusta, Georgia, and the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Bentonville, Arkansas, to name a few. She and her late husband moved from New York in 1977 to a log cabin in the Ozark Mountains in Arkansas where she found a visceral connection to nature, which is exuded by her work. She draws inspiration from her life in the woods and her mythical sculptures convey this oneness with nature.
The Madison Artists Guild would like to thank the following in-kind sponsors for making this show possible: Eenoco Japanese Steak and Sushi, Olde South Wine and Spirits, Boxwoods Gardens and Gifts, Godfrey’s Feed & Seed, Madison Oaks Inn and Rutledge Frame Shop.

____________________________ The Madison Artists Guild Presents THE XLG SHOW @ TOWN 220 ![]() The Madison Artists Guild Presents a series of quarterly shows of large works in the Gallery at Town 220. Next up is a selection of Gary Hudson's work from the 1970's. Opening reception will be held at Town 220 Restaurant & Gallery on August 4 from 6 to 8 p.m. Music will be provided by Mark Maxwell. Town 220 is located at 220 West Washington St. in Madison. The Show runs through October 30th. Gary Hudson began studying art in 1945 at the age of nine and solidified his desire to be a painter upon seeing his first Jackson Pollock as a young adult living in New York City. By that time, Hudson was confined to a wheelchair, the result of a peacetime accident while enlisted in the Marine Corps. Following his desire to learn and paint, Hudson crisscrossed the country and the Atlantic Ocean, living at various times in New York City, California, and Europe. In order to teach at the collegiate level, Hudson entered the School of Art and Architecture at Yale University and earned a B.F.A. and M.F.A from Yale in 1966. The first major breakthrough for Hudson came in 1969 when his acrylic Red Rim was selected for the biennial show at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. From there, his paintings began to be appreciated through a series of one man and group shows at museums including the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art; Corcoran Museum, Washington, D.C.; Indianapolis Museum; “Out of Sight” Museum of Fine Art, San Diego, California; and the Cleveland Museum, Cleveland, OH. Currently, his works are held in the collections of the Whitney Museum; San Diego Museum of Fine Arts; Republic Insurance Company, Des Moines, Iowa; Greenville County Museum of Art, Greenville, S.C.; Worcester Museum, Worcester, MA; and numerous private collections around the United States. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() June 2011 First Friday Art Opening Joe Coggins' art at The Meiere House Antiques ![]() ![]()

Meiere House phone number is 706-752-0009.
There will be
a party on the porch with libations and munchies and you'll get to meet this
energetic new Guildie and see his tranquil depictions of nature. We'll
also be voting on the Board's nomination of additional board members so be sure
and attend! Bring an appetizer and a friend!
Joe, a native
Georgia boy who was born and raised in College Park has had a live steeped in
all aspects of the business of art. From the wholesale end of things to
framing and now print makinig, Joe has not only painted and taught art for 20
yrs , but he's successfully marketed it too. For many years he owned a
high end store which sold originals and antique prints and in Florida he and
wife Willene owned a boutique which dealt in home accessories, custom framing,
original art and antique prints. Heck, Joe even made a mean silk flower
arrangement and sold many of them for several hundred dollars each. He's
just got that artistic touch!
As an artist,
Joe studied under Roman and Constantin Chatov and Ouida Cannady where he
perfected his technique. During the 12 years he spent in Florida he really
hit his painting hot and heavy and never stopped. He now enjoys life on a
Morgan County horse farm owned by his daughter and he and his sweet wife Willene
spend lots of time with grand kids and continue to market their antique prints
at Scott's Antique Market. Lucky us, he will also have a booth at the
Meiere House! Joe also produces high quality giclee prints as another
aspect of his business. He can print HUGE prints on his 40" printer, so be
sure you talk to him about any printing needs you might have!
The Madison Artists Guild Presents TWO WOMEN OF SUBSTANCE: an art show of large works by Katie Bacon and Maggie Mize.
Free
and open to the public This is the second in a series of
quarterly art shows of large-scale works and it will open on Wednesday, May 4th
at 6 pm. The show is located at the
Town 220 Gallery and Restaurant at 220 W. Washington St. in downtown Madison,
GA. The show runs
through July 2011. Acclaimed
Athens musician Mark Maxwell will perform from 6:30 – 8:30 pm at the
reception. Wine and hors’
de oeuvres will be served at the reception and dinner reservations can be made
by calling 706-752-1445.
About the artists: KATIE BACON
received her BFA with a focus in painting from the University of Georgia.
“Capturing a visual experience in relation to the essence of a felling or
a way of thinking is what I aim to achieve,” she says of her work.
These abstract oil paintings are large and colorful and present the
viewer with “a chance for an escape into an idealized dream.”
In addition to showing her works, Ms. Bacon has taught at Bascom Visual
Arts Center in Highlands, NC and plans to pursue her MFA in painting in the near
future. MAGGIE MIZE is a self-taught artist who works with acrylic on steel. “A sheet of steel yet untouched by the artist can be bright and captivating or dark and enchanting” and this variety of mood is evident in each unique work. “the paint must become an element of the steel, allowing the iridescent fascination, and the romantic fusion of both to be conceived as one.” Ms. Mize and her husband live in the Athens area in a space that is both home, welding shop and gallery. The world is her oyster and she has big plans for pearlescence on metal to really take her places.
The works are for sale and benefit the artists, MAG, and the restaurant. For more information call 706-752-0137.

OCTOBER PHOTO SHOW - Sept. 30 Oct. 30 at STMA
Country Studio Cosmopolitan Talent MAG Members Tour Chatov Studio - Nov 22, 2009 Country Studio, Cosmopolitan Talent Picture it, ten quiet acres of rolling fields and dense southern woodland, viewed at the golden hour just before sunset. The perfect setting for any creative activity, including the studied pursuit of painting the human form. This, renowned artist, Marc Chatov can do practically with his eyes closed! A group of 20 members of the Madison Artists Guild and friends were cordially welcomed into Gaye and Marc Chatov’s extraordinary home and studio to learn not only about Marc’s work but also about the work of his father, Roman Chatov and his uncle Constantin Chatov. The group of artists and art lovers were treated to a top-to-bottom tour of their farm style home with its open floor plan and soaring ceilings, the ideal backdrop, with its perfect light streaming in, to display the works of a world class trio of artists. Personal stories about growing up in this passionately artistic Russian family made the tour even more interesting and engaging. A short walk from the main house, the studio is simultaneously cozy and spacious. Dozens of paintings hang on and lean against the walls, works in progress perch on easels and intriguing still lifes of curious collections sit atop chests and tables, waiting to become the subjects of future works of art. Marc explained the meaning behind some of the pieces and invited guests to wander around the workspace and ask questions. There was plenty to see, including a pair of large-scale figure drawings in charcoal and conte crayon, a portrait commission in progress, an expansive oil painting of whistling angels, one of the artist’s favorite personal pieces. Though the time spent in this pleasant atmosphere was short, the visitors felt the genuine warmth and hospitality of the Chatov’s. Surrounded by the beauty of nature, their family and a variety of animal friends, goats, dogs and cats included, Marc and Gaye have created an idyllic homestead and creative retreat. It’s hard to imagine ever wanting to leave that setting. But in addition to painting a vast body of work, Marc also teaches a sold out weekly figure study class in Atlanta and very popular and well-attended workshops around the country. The Guild and Marc’s wife Gaye (he dubbed her his “left brain”), who keeps Marc on schedule with all his commitments, discussed the possibility of a workshop in Madison in 2010. We will keep the art community up to date on this extraordinary opportunity! For more information on the Madison Artists Guild and future studio field trips, please call Karen Strelecki at 706-752-0137.
