The publisher is Rizzoli New York and the article is six pages long. I will donate one copy of the book to the cottage library. Browsing the book provides a little mini visit to the Caribbean, this could be good, especially this time of the year! Famous guests to the resort have been actor Harrison Ford and his family, and singer Rihanna with her team. ![]() ____________________________________________ Pop-Up Shop for the Holidays ![]()
MAG member Elizabeth Collins, owner of Sparkle Plenty Art and the
organizer of the Broughton Artists Group opened a Pop-Up Shop for
the holidays on Black Friday in November. The store was open 6
days a week and they also taught some really fun pottery classes.
Other MAG artists who participated in the terrific little
"short-lived by design" shop which was full of nothing but fabulous
local art were Chuck Hanes, Dottie Kurtz, Betsy Winn, Peggy Martin
and Gary Adams, & Diane Davies with many other Broughton Artists
joining in. Local shoppers were in there in droves all during
the holidays till the shop closed its doors right after Christmas.
By all accounts this little venture was a big hit and a financial
success! Congratulations to Elizabeth and her Pop-up partners
for coming up with a way to promote local art and utilize an empty
space downtown. Any plans for more pop-ups? Maybe for
Valentines? ;-)

_______________________________________________ RUBBING ELBOWS WITH THE GOVERNOR ![]() Georgia Governor Nathan Deal selects local artist Pat DeVane Burns' work for the Capitol
July 26th, I had the pleasure of meeting Governor Deal and his wife,
Sandra, at the Capitol in Atlanta. My friend, Judy Neal, went
with me and was such a treasure to have along. Judy has worked
in and around the Capitol for many years and definitely knows her
way around! As Gov. Deal said to me.."She (Judy) is
multi-talented!" Gov. Deal hosted a reception for
approximately 22 Arts Clayton juried artists who currently have over
forty pieces of artwork hanging in his and his staff's offices for a
year. He personally selected the artwork and I'm happy to
report that he chose all four that I submitted. For the next
three years, the Arts Clayton group will submit new work to be
selected. Now that we have had a tour of the Capitol and the
spaces where the art hangs, I have a better idea of what to submit
in the upcoming years. Many thanks to Gov. Deal for carrying
on a 25 year tradition of including Georgia art in the Capitol! ___________________________ EXTREME MAKEOVER: HOME EDITION GEORGIA BUILD ![]() As most folks in Madison know by now, Extreme Makeover Home Edition was in town the week of July 10 to build a new home for Anaiah Rucker and her family. Several of our Artist Guild members were also able to help out with the build. Ed Farmer worked 6 days on the show and is pictured above with Ty Pennington. Pat, his wife, worked one day. Our Director, Karen Strelecki, helped Mary do a little painting and some unusual paper creations in Anaiah's room, while Pete Muzyka designed the bed for the master bedroom. In addition to Karen Strelecki, Mary Leslie, Eugene Swain, Hiram Johnston & Dick Crooks - who are pictured in the attached photos - helped with the build. Kiki Pollard, Peg Harvard & Pete Muzyka also participated. _____________________________ MEMBER NEWS ![]()
Rita Knight, a member of the Madison
Artist Guild, is in the spring issue of "Studios Magazine". The
national magazine comes out quarterly and is available at Barnes
& Noble, Borders, Hobby Lobby, Michael's as well as other large
bookstores and craft stores. Ty Pennington, the host of ABC's
popular show, "Extreme Make Over/Home Edition" is on the cover.
In addition to teaching children's jewelry-making classes through MAG, she also has recently developed a line of bridal earring designs that is being sold to retail shops. Her MAG jewelry-making classes as well as her original designs can be viewed on her blog, http://trinketsjewelrydesigns.blogspot.com/ _________________________ 4th Annual Plein Air Paint Out
Considering our recent stormy weather and all the havoc it wreaked
in Madison, the Guild and I were really worried about the forecast
for the weekend of the Spring Tour of Homes and our 4th annual Plein
Air Paint Out. As it turned out, we needn't have worried!
May 6th and 7th turned out to be absolutely picture perfect so the
Paint Out and Mini Show flourished under the clear skies and
moderate temperatures.
18
plein air painters, some new to our event and some veterans,
scattered across the town and country to create stunning images on
canvas and paper. At the end of the painting day on Friday, we
all gathered back at the Cultural Center lawn to present the work at
a lovely reception and silent auction. Members of the Guild
contributed the fruit, cheese & crackers which was delicious and
expertly plated by MMCC volunteers. Wine stewards (more Guild
vols) made sure everyone's glass was never empty and guests as well
as volunteers and painters refreshed themselves while the paintings
were being admired.
And the winners were: Best of Show went to Sam Traina for Barn
on Dixie, First Place was awarded to Marsha Savage for Boat House
Roses, Second Place was won by Greg Holzhauer for Afternoon Dream,
and Third Place went to John Guernsey for Red Roof.
Four paintings sold during the auction and many Mini Show sales were
made. When all the sales were tabulated the Guild took in
nearly $700 in commissions and all the artists have been paid.
So, we were only $100 off our total commission of $800 taken in at
each of the last two Paint Outs. This is our biggest yearly
fund raiser, so it's great to know that even in a down economy we
can hold our own! We must have something people want!

SATURDAY APRIL 16
___________________________________________________ Paula Lansford Exhibit Madison Artists Guild Member Paula Lansford is scheduled to have a showing of her large bird paintings at The Point of Art Gallery & Studio in historic downtown Union Point at their first pop-up show, “A Burst of Spring,“ opening Friday, March 18 and closing Sunday, March 20. "It's really exciting to host a pop-up show. It‘s a new concept, very ‘in style’ in London and other art centers, and it’s an interesting concept.“ Anne Jenkins, owner of The Point of Art Gallery, said. "Paula‘s work is big, bold and quite perfect for a spring show - lots of hummingbirds and flowers!” A pop-up show is a the opposite of the usual month-long gallery show. Lansford’s paintings will be up for three days only - with Lansford in attendance on the Saturday and Sunday, March 29 & 20 from 11:00a.m. - 3:00 p.m. each day demonstrating her style of painting. It is the perfect time to meet the artist, find out how she works and what inspires her. But remember, there’s a limited time to buy her art, noted Jenkins. ![]() Paula was born in Assam, India on a tea plantation. Her family relocated to the UK when she was 11 years of age. She moved to the United States at 21 years of age and designed greeting cards and gift wrap for Creative Studios in Olmsted Falls, Ohio. ___________________________________________

XLG SHOW CONTINUES March, XLG SHOW @ TOWN 220 It's not too early to mark your calendars for March 15, 6:30 - 8:45 at Town 220 and the James Madison Conference Center. This will be a very fun and informative gathering with the program being presented by Richard "Ole" Olsen, the first XLG SHOW artist. Ole's dynamic work is hanging in the Gallery at Town 220 and from 6:30 to 7:30 we'll have a socializing hour with a self guided tour of Ole's show. Then at 7:30 we'll go downstairs to a conference room to see a digital presentation of Calculations: What Could be Painting? by Ole. This is going to be a very enlightening talk about Ole's artistic life and his process. I think we will all come away with a new way to think about our own work. ![]()
The event is free and open to the public, but MAG members get
preferential seating, so please email me to let me know you're
coming. ![]() ___________________ The Morgan County Young Artists Exhibit December 26, 2010 – January 6, 2011 For the first time, the Madison Artists Guild’s Youth Curators Heidi Behrendsen and Brandon Luepkes presented a special Morgan County Young Artists Exhibit at the Guild Cottage at Town Park. The show opened on December 27th with an all day open house reception from 11:00 am till 4:30 pm. This show was conceived of and curated entirely by Heidi and Brandon in an effort to highlight the young artists in and around Madison. The Guild invited the two young artists to “take over” the Guild Cottage for this show. So the entire gallery was given over to these aspiring talents for the Christmas holidays. The Madison Artists Guild is made up of supporters of the arts, amateur artists, and practicing, professional artists with many years of experience in the field. Each member has a desire to encourage upcoming artists to follow their dreams of making art either for a living or just for the joy of being creative. Therefore, we invited the participants of the Young Artists Exhibit to display and sell their work in our gallery.

I
have to say, I've never seen such a big still life set up for a class!
Artist and instructor Carol Fox brought gobs of interesting reflective
objects, flowers, fruit, and fabrics to set up a stage set for us to
paint! We were given view finders made from mat boards to scan the
set for some spot within it that spoke to us. What a fun way to
paint a still life! We each had something different.
Carol did a great little demo painting in nothing flat which impressed
and inspired us to make something beautiful. The five of us in the
class dived in and painted our hearts out. We couldnt believe it
when somebody asked what time it was and it was already 5:00 pm!
After cleaning up the space, we took turns presenting our paintings and
received good advice on what needed to be done to make it better.
Carol had spent a lot of time with each of us during the class making
suggestions for adding the colors of the reflections we had to really
look to see in the still life elements. Its amazing what colors
are there if you just take the time to really look! We cant wait
to get back together with Carol and see what we can see! ![]() _____________________________
Painting the Figure in Oils
Fourteen artists gathered at the Steffen Thomas Museum of Art to learn from a painting master, Marc Chatov. We sought his knowledge, expertise, and artist’s eye to help us make our art better. Painting from live models Marc shared his technique and philosophy, his experiences in the world of figure painting, and his advice on our work. Each
artist has his/her own style and point of view.
Even using the identical tubes of paint, similar surfaces, and
brushes, we each poured out our impressions of what we saw in totally
unique ways. It was really
exciting and fun to see everyone’s interpretation of the models. Marc praised, advised, critiqued, and guided us individually on a path to improving the way we accurately look at our subjects, produce believable color, and all the while never forgetting “values, values, values”!
